That looks really great!” many guests exclaim while looking at the lovingly created Phantasialand decorations. But are the pillars of Wuze Town really as ancient as they look? Were the mosaics of the old Berlin rotunda actually painstakingly put together? And why do Colorado Adventure’s sandstone mountains look like they’ve been here since the dinosaur age? To create the right atmosphere, the seven employees in the decoration department use a number of tricks. They cultivate the art of illusion painting, trimming new to old, and old to new. Phantasialand News spoke to Alexander Moisa, theater painter and sculptor in the decoration department.PHL News: Mr. Moisa, for the past seven years you have been employed in the decoration department of Phantasialand, throwing guests into confusion. Doesn’t your conscience bother you a little?
Moisa: But no, I’m rather proud when we manage to make the guests think. A disadvantage, however, is that decorations are often touched because visitors want to convince themselves of the supposed authenticity.
PHL News:
You work from the designer’s template. But you’ve also done your own designs…
Moisa: Yes, Colorado Adventure, Super Globe and Mystery Castle.
PHL News: Where do you get your imagination for such large projects?
Moisa: I always research in great detail, then I let everything I see sink in, build models, draw, paint, do a lot of sports… I hope the muse kisses me.
PHL News: Keyword muse. Is it true that you always design representations based on human models?
Moisa: That’s right – at the moment I’m looking for a suitable portrait of a woman in the dome of the old Berlin theater.
PHL News: What makes Phantasialand so special for you?
Moisa: Phantasialand has become part of my life. I know all the bigger theme parks, but the atmosphere here is unique.
PHL News: What’s that atmosphere like?
Moisa: A very family atmosphere: so many interesting people work here and they all share the idea of Phantasialand.
PHL News: What is your favorite attraction?
Moisa: Colorado Adventure! This attraction combines beautiful design and fast ride. Almost everything is right here: the decoration, the atmosphere, the thrill…
PHL News: … almost everything?
Moisa: I would like to add decorations to the hall where the Colorado adventure and the wild water ride cross. I’ve already built the model for it, created an atmosphere like in Indiana Jones’ cave.
PHL News: What else would you like to change decor-wise?
Moisa: Crazy Loop has to go. I don’t like this ride at all. This is fair. Besides, I’ve gotten really bad at it.
PHL News: Mr. Moisa, thank you for this interview.
